Mouthful

Mouthful is a project that came from the idea of mixing fashion based photography, with food as a prop, which normally isn’t used in fashion. In turn this makes the model behave in an unconventional manner. I had this idea of what I wanted my work to look like for a long time and I knew exactly what I wanted to do to create them, but I really wasn’t sure why. I made the connection between how we behave when we are on our own as opposed to how we behave when we are with other people. One tends to be how we actually act when no one is looking and have no shame in our appearance, while the other usually causes a person to be more self-conscious and polite. For a long time I felt uncomfortable eating in public or around people that I didn’t really know. I that credit to poor body image and a lack of comfort and confidence. I try to glamorize this act of not having any shame in behavior, or in this case eating, by dressing my models up in fancy vintage clothing that isn’t what you would typically just lay around and they look fabulous while it is happening. It also puts the models in a state where they are vulnerable because of their appearance because they aren’t necessarily going to be making expressions that are flattering. My goal for these images is to have them look like beautiful portraits at first glance, but when you look closer you notice that they are different and kind of weird. I want to create something that is unconventional yet interesting and appealing to the eye and that people can relate to.
